Target Positioning Viewers: Adding and Editing Reticles
The Target Positioning Viewers supports setting up and displaying Reticles. Reticles are positioning fiducials used to properly orient the target within the target chamber prior to a shot.
A list of Reticles is shown in the lower right portion of the Target Positioning Viewer. Reticles can be added, deleted, or edited using the buttons below the Reticles List.
Reticle data can be exported to and imported from CSV-formatted files. To do this, select the Export/Import Reticle Data menu item under the File menu of the Target Positioning Viewer.
Individual reticles can be shown or hidden by selecting them in the Reticles List and right-clicking with the mouse.
Reticles at the Laser Beam Pointing Positions can be automatically added to the list of reticles (the pointing positions do not account for the Focus Offset). To do this, press the Add For Beams button located below the Reticles List. Reticles added have the following properties:
- A reticle is added for each Laser Beam Cluster (beams should be grouped into clusters according to their beam pointing locations)
- Reticle names are set to the name of their associated Laser Beam Cluster
- If the beam pointings within a given cluster are not the same, an additional reticle is added for each unique beam pointing, and a beam name is appended to the cluster name.
- Reticle diameters are 1.0 mm.
The crosshairs of Reticles, by default, are bounded by their circle's diameter. However, they can be extended to span the entire view. To do this, check the "Use Extended Crosshairs for Reticles" box in the Graphics tab in Edit | Preferences.
To put the Target Positioning Viewer into the Modify Reticles mode, press the Modify Reticles button (
). When in the Modify Reticles mode, the following reticle manipulations are supported:
- A reticle can be moved with the mouse by selecting it in the graphics window, and dragging the reticle to a new position. Doing this, the reticle moves in a plane parallel to the viewing plane.
- A reticle can also be moved in the direction perpendicular to the view by selecting reticle with mouse while pressing "n" key, and moving mouse up or down in view. The position in other view is automatically updated.
- Reticles sizes can be modified by selecting reticle with mouse while pressing "r" key, and moving mouse up or down in view.
Reticles are treated somewhat differently for the OMEGA/EP chambers versus the NIF, LMJ, or ORION chambers. The differences are highlighted below.
OMEGA and OMEGA-EP Chambers:
For OMEGA and OMEGA-EP, the Reticles list display has the following characteristics:
- reticle parameters are directly edited in the list boxes.
- reticles are shown only for the Narrow View and Wide View cameras.
- the diameters (in microns) are specified separately for the Narrow-X view (Nx), Narrow-Y view (Ny), Wide-X view (Wx), and Wide-Y view (Wy); if a diameter is zero, the reticle is not displayed.
- reticles can be associated with groups; the reticles displayed in the list are those contained in the selected group; when adding a new reticle, it is automatically put into the group being displayed.
- the display of crosshairs is controlled individually for reticles.
- reticle data can be exported to either *.CSV or *.XML files.
- the right-click menu is used to: set colors, show/hide reticles, move reticles from one group to another, and duplicate or delete reticles.
- displaying reticles as ellipses is supported; while reticles sizes are entered as diameters, they appear in the X/Y views as elliptical because of the specified orientation angles (q,f) of the reticle's normal vector relative to the view.
- R, Theta, Phi in columns 2 through 4 are the spherical coordinates of the reticle position.

For the X-TVS/Y-TVS Viewer, to print a composite of the X-TVS and Y-TVS views, along with a list of reticle parameters, select File | Print at the top of the viewer.
NIF, LMJ, ORION Chambers:
For the NIF, LMJ, and ORION chambers, the Reticles list display has the following characteristics:
- Reticles can be applied to all views of the Target Positioning Viewer or to just one of its views.
- Showing or hiding Reticles in the display can be controlled using the check box in the lower right portion of the viewer.
- R, Theta, Phi in columns 2 through 4 are the spherical coordinates of the reticle position.

When a reticle is added or edited, a window showing reticle parameters appears. Here, the position, size, and color of the reticle can be adjusted.
